President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday renamed Gregory's Road, Colombo 7, R.G. Senanayake Mawatha by unveiling its new name board. A copy of the gazette notification relating to the renaming of Gregory's Road where late R.G. Senanayake's historic residence is situated, as R.G. Senanayake Mawatha was presented by the President to Surani Senanayake, a member of the R.G. Senanayake family.

A press release issued by the President's Media Division said the late R.G.Senanayake rendered a memorable service in the political, religious and social fields in the country.

He entered the Second State Council on December 17,1944 by winning the by-election held to the Dambadeniya seat. Since independence he represented the Dambadeniya seat in Parliament for over 40 years. For the first time in Sri Lanka's Parliamentary history, he won two seats, Kelaniya and Dambadeniya at the same election with a thumping majority. The Rubber-Rice Pact he signed with China is still in operation benefiting both countries.

He later joined the SLFP formed in 1951 by late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and D.A. Rajapaksa and other patriots after resigning from the UNP. Kelaniya was declared a sacred area during his tenure as MP for Kelaniya since his services included the building up of the indigenous textile industry to break the Indian textile monopoly, setting up of the Trust Board and the Sinhala Cultural Centre and reclaiming the Trincomalee Gokanna Viharaya and vesting it in the Sinhala Buddhists.

The Maha Sangha led by Ven Kamuburugamuwe Vajira Thera, Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Deputy Minister Geetanjana Gunawardena, Parliamentarians A.H.M. Azwer, Karu Jayasuriya and Ruwan Wijewardena , Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil and members of the R.G. Senanayake family were also present.
