A 25 year old accused who was found guilty of attempting to smuggle over 25 grams of heroin into the Colombo Remand Prison concealed in a false bottom of a food container was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Colombo High Court yesterday.

Following a lengthy trial, Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakarathne determined that the prosecution had been able to prove the allegations against the accused beyond reasonable doubt. Based on the evidence that transpired during the trial, court imposed a life sentence on the accused.

The arrest was made by the Prison Intelligence Unit on December 4, 2019, when the suspect attempted to transport 25.09 grams of heroin hidden in a false bottom of a bucket used to carry food to a friend in the Colombo Remand Prison. Subsequently, the Attorney General filed an indictment against the accused on charges of possession and trafficking of heroin.
