The Walana Police Central Anti-Corruption Unit has arrested one of the two main suspects in a vehicle racket where fake engines and chassis numbers have been illegally assembled in more than 400 vehicles for sale.
Police Media Division said that the suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon (10) after he arrived at the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit to record a statement in connection to the ongoing investigation on the 400 illegally assembled and registered vehicles by providing false documentation information and registering one of the vehicles by entering false data in the computer system of the Motor Traffic Department.
The suspect has been arrested on charges of making a vehicle registration book for a Prado Jeep which has a registered number plate using fake documents that had been entered in the Motor Traffic Department computer system. This Prado jeep in question is one of the 400 illegally assembled vehicles that the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit is continuing investigations since the racket was busted in August, 2023.
The user of this Prado jeep was previously arrested by the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit on December 26, 2024.
The initial investigation commenced on this illegal vehicle registration and sale racket in August 2023 when the Walana Police arrested a suspect together with his vehicle after receiving information that he is using a vehicle registered using false documents
and discovered a large number of forged documents for vehicle registrations inside his house.
The Police Media Division said that over 400 vehicles had been imported and prepared for illegal assembly and registration by the suspects involved in the racket for sale and so far three suspects have been arrested together with the suspect arrested yesterday.
The Walana Anti-Corruption Unit in Panadura is conducting further investigations.
