The promising athletes came to the highlight with setting up new meet records at the Junior National Athletic championship held at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Diyagama yesterday.The three day meet produced good platform for juniors to perform while Sri Lanka athletics named this meet as selection trial for World Junior Athletic Championship and already few athletes reached the qualifying standard.
Tharushi Abhisheka of Wickramabahu CC Gampola, Ranhidha Alwis of Sri Lanka Army, Ayomal Akalanka of Ambaganuwa CC and Dilki Nehara of Sri Sumangala Girls School Panadura set up new meet records yesterday.
Tharushi Abhisheka set up 800m new meet record clocking 2 minutes 11.06 seconds while Ranhidha Alwis made a new record of under 20 shot put with a distance of 16.69m.
Dilki Nehara the athlete from Sri Sumangala Girls Panadura came to the fore as she created new meet record of under 18 triple jump with a leap of 12.19m.
Ayomal Akalanka of Ambaganuwa CC established a new meet record of under 20, 400m hurdles with a time of 51 .53 seconds. (D.R)
