Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala issued a notice yesterday (11) ordering social activist Chirantha Amarasinghe to appear in Court on July 25. The notice was issued in connection with allegations that Amarasinghe threatened the Mannar Bishop following the bishop meeting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Mannar.
The complaint, related to this incident, was filed with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by Dr.Fidelis Lionel Emmanuel Fernando, the Bishop of Mannar. According to the CID’s submission to Court, President Wickremesinghe visited Mannar on June 16 to discuss development activities in the area and met with Bishop Fernando during this visit.
The CID informed the Court that the suspect, Amarasinghe, allegedly called and threatened Bishop Fernando over the phone regarding this meeting. During the investigation, when officers visited Amarasinghe’s residence in Maharagama, he was not present prompting the CID to request a warrant for his arrest.
Taking these points into consideration, the magistrate issued a notice for Amarasinghe to appear in Court on July 25 and postponed the case until that date.
