Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said in Parliament yesterday that 245,521 students have qualified to sit for GCE Advanced Level Examination, which is 72.07 percent, according to the results of the GCE O/L Examination issued yesterday. The Minister said that there has been an increase in the number of those who qualified for the Advanced Level Examination and the percentage of students that have qualified to study for the Advanced Level Examination has increased to 72.07 percent from 62.63 percent last year.
The Minister said this while making a statement about the results of the GCE OL Examination.
A total of 472,553 students appeared for the OL Examination this year. According to the results, 13,588 children obtained nine ‘A’ passes, that is, ‘As’ in all subjects, which is 3.39 percent, the Minister said. The Minister mentioned that 11,053 students have obtained nine ‘A’ passes in all subjects last year, which is 3.31 percent.
According to this year’s results, a student from Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy has topped the island rankings at the GCE Ordinary Level Examination in 2023, while the second place has been achieved by a student from Vembady Girls’ High School in Jaffna. A student from Royal College, Colombo had obtained third place.
Two fourth-placed students from Royal College, Colombo and another from Holy Cross College, Gampaha have achieved the feat.
There are four sixth places and two of them are from Galle Sanghamitta Girls’ College, and other two from Kurunegala Maliyadeva Boys’ College and Trincomalee Srika Sangamugan Hindu Girls’ College.
Two students from Colombo, Musaeus College and Kandy Girls high School have obtained the tenth place.
The Minister further said that it took three months to evaluate the answer scripts of the AL Examination and because of that the results of the Ordinary Level Examination were delayed.
The evaluation of the answer sheets was also delayed due to a professional action.
The Minister said that after the evaluation of the answer scripts of the A/L Exam, the evaluation of the answer scripts of the O/L Examination was started at the end of August and he thanked all the teachers for taking steps to release the results within three-and-a-half months.
The Minister also emphasized that it is special that the announcement of the cut off marks of the faculties of universities for the qualified A/L students has been done within six weeks this time.
