The Polonnaruwa Magistrate ordered that a bus driver accused of driving recklessly and causing an accident injuring 40 passengers be remanded till December 11.
The accident happened on Thursday (30) morning on the Welikanda – Sinhapura main road in Polonnaruwa and the driver was presented before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday (01). He was arrested by Welikanda Police officers.
The police said that the bus driver who was remanded is a 32-year-old resident of Nava Mahasenpura, Welikanda, Polonnaruwa, named Epiwatthegedara Udula Samantha Kumara.
In this accident, 36 women and four men were injured and admitted to the Welikanda Regional Hospital. Some of them were transferred to Polonnaruwa General Hospital.
The bus carrying a group of employees working in a private rice mill located in Sinhapura was running from the Mahasenpura area of Welikanda when it met with an accident in the Muthuwella area of Welikanda. Four people who were seriously injured are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Polonnaruwa General Hospital. A spokesperson of the Polonnaruwa General Hospital stated that several injured women have been treated and left the hospital. Police are conducting further investigations.
