Suspect arrested for fratricide over alleged love affair

A man (55) was arrested yesterday for the alleged murder of his brother (65), Manamperige Karunadasa, who lived in Akuressa, Henegama, Balapatha, Udugamawatta Hena.

The suspect who allegedly killed his brother and burnt his body was arrested by the Akuressa Police yesterday (1).

Both houses of the deceased brother and the assaulted younger brother are located in the same land and the deceased brother lived with his wife in Dehiaththakandiya area. It is customary for him, who carries out cinnamon crushing as his job, to come to the Henegama house once a month, grind cinnamon and takes the money and goes back to Dehiaththakandiya.

According to the complaint made by his wife to the Police that he was missing even though he said that he would return home on October 28. The Police have managed to uncover many facts after questioning the suspect. Accordingly, the younger brother of the deceased was arrested and questioned on suspicion on Friday (1).

On the night of October 27, the suspect had gone hunting but the hunt was unsuccessful. On the 28th, when he returned home at around 4.00 a.m., a lighted flashlight was pointed at his face. He came forward with the torch and it has been discovered that the brother was beaten to death near the well and the body was doused with petrol for three days and the burnt body and the rest of the debris was dumped in the stream near the well.

Upon questioning, it has been revealed that the suspect’s wife had drowned two years ago and that the deceased brother had an affair with his wife before that, so he was enmity with him.

On the instructions of Akuressa Assistant Superintendent of Police Mahesh Perera, the suspect was arrested by Chief Inspector Dharmavardhan of the Criminal Investigation Division under the direction of Akuressa Police Station OIC Chief Inspector Sudath Sudusinghe.

Criminal Investigation Division Sub-Inspectors Lalith Nupehewa, Priyantha Jayalath, Sergeants Sugathadasa, Nayanajith and Vajira are leading the investigation.

Matara Crime Investigation Laboratory (SOCO) officers are assisting in the investigations and the Magistrate’s investigation is scheduled to be held. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court on December 2. The Police have found the place where the body is suspected to have been burnt.
