Muay Thai was introduced to Sri Lanka in 2022.by. World Boxing Council Sri Lanka which is an extension of World Boxing Council Muay Thai of Thailand.
Sri Lankan Champion Ajmal Yakoob will be fighting for the main event at the WBC for the belt at the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo 7. on November 18 2023. The event is open to the public to witness Ajmal’s fight.
Ajmal is a Sri Lankan National Muay Thai Champion and a professional MMA fighterr. He and his wife Zeyana Haniffa have together created one of the strongest brands in MMA and Muay Thai that the WBC Sri Lanka approached both to bring in marketing and a crowd for this event especially because of Ajmal’s fight portfolio. Also WBC hoped to add brand value by inducting
Zeyana into the WBC management team and giving Ajmal the main event as he is also already an established professional fighter who has fought in Dubai and Thailand.
Ajmal’s story as a professional fighter is one of those that embodies the grit and grace of an athlete who shows great mettle to make his dream come true as one of the best in Sri Lanka. Hailing from humble backgrounds in Slave Island, at 14 years of age Shaolin Kung Fu became Ajmal’s path to his journey as a professional fighter.

Speaking to the Daily News Ajmal Yakoob stressed – “I’m glad WBC approached me to fight for the main event so I can add value to their league with my brand presence and my fight portfolio and equally gain from them. To get to the top in the industry, I had to work on my own, with no money and no handouts. It’s pure hard work and self-belief. I worked hard to train under UFC coaches in Dubai for 4 years.
