Thilina Weerasinghe to lead Navy rugby team

In the coming season the Sri Lanka Navy rugger side will be led and coached by two Kandy school products, that is Thilina Madushan Weerasinghe captain for the second time and Nihal Viper Gunaratne as coach. Thilina Weerasinghe, started his schooling at Sarasavi Uyana Peradeniya upto grade 10 and then crossed over to Kingswood College where he did well in sports. Thilina Weerasinghe, the stocky full back playedt much of his rugby with the Sailors. At Kingswood he was groomed by Nilfer Ibrahim and Nalaka Weerakoddy in 2010 and 2011,This talented ruggerite was a standout player even in his school days. He is a top scorer and helped his teams to win matches with his good goal kicking and try scoring.

Thilina Weerasinghe played for Kingswood College form 2008 to2011, where he polished his game of rugby as full back and gave his best for the school, straight from school he joined the Navy and from 2012 he is playing for the team, In the year 2017 he led the Navy sevens, and in the year 2018 and led the Xv side team, he also led the Defence Services team and also was in national squad in sevens and fifteens. he is sure to give his best as captain for the Sai lors who are blessed with a good side.

They have an experienced coach Nihal “Viper” Gunaratne, affectionately called ‘Viper’, has shown a lot of promise in rugby as a player and coach. He has years of experience in playing and coaching. He is one of the top rugby players produced by Kandy and has proved his capabilities in the last 47 years.In the coming inter club season he has taken over Navy side as coach He started his rugby at St. Anthony’s College and played from 1974 for the senior side and captained in 1975 and 1976. He also played for the Outstation Schools and Combined Schools in 1977. Straight from school he joined Kandy SC and played in 1977 and led the side in 1984. He played for the country in 1978 in the Rugby Asiad and Hong Kong Sevens. He also played for CR& FC and Up-Country. He was head coach of St. Anthony’s 1st XV team 2016.Dharmaraja 1987-92, Army, CH and FC and Isipathana . He coached Sri Lanka Under 20 in 2007, Sri Lanka Youth team in 2010 and 2011.
