Mass Media State Minister Shantha Bandara yesterday requested postal employees to report to duty from today as the government has taken a decision to implement an investment project without causing any damage to the iconic Nuwara Eliya Post Office building.
Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (9) at the Postal Department Headquarters Bandara said that this building was built in 1894 and the Archaeology Department declared the it as a building of archaeological value.
“Postal workers and trade unions request the government to implement the investment without making any damage to the iconic building. We have agreed to this request,” he said.
The State Minister said that the postal workers had requested the government to implement the investment project while allowing the post employees to carry out their services from the building. He added that the government has agreed to the request made by the postal employees.
The Sate Minister said a discussion was held with the Urban Development Authority over the implementation of the investment plan while protecting the building.
“Our agreement is to hand over the premises for an investment while protecting the iconic building,”he said.
