The circular for relaxation of import restrictions on public transport vehicles is to be amended and those who have been issued Letters of Credit are allowed to import vehicles according to the existing circular, State Finance Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.
He said that in the next few days, the circular that was issued relaxing the import restrictions, especially for buses and lorries used for public transport, will be revised again.
The State Minister stated this while speaking to the media after a programme held in the Dehiowita area yesterday.
The State Minister said that by the circular removing the import restrictions imposed on buses and trucks used for public transport services, the import of 10-year-old vehicles was allowed.
But according to the facts presented by the experts in the field, although the prices of 10-year-old vehicles are low, the cost of maintenance, the cost of spare parts and the cost of fuel are relatively high, so the State Minister said that it had to be reconsidered.
However, the State Minister said that since the previously issued circular was valid until September 14, those who have been issued Letters of Credit during that period will be allowed to import vehicles according to the existing circular.
Also, the Minister emphasised that the new circular will be issued very quickly so that it will be effective at a suitable time for the import of buses and trucks to Sri Lanka without incurring unnecessary maintenance costs, unnecessary spare parts costs and unnecessary fuel costs.
