The Sri Lankan selectors announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 which will be held from October 5 in India. Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe approved this team on Monday which includes two players who are subject to fitness and also one stand by player.The team will leave today.
Dilshan Madushanka who was not named in the Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup, have returned to the side but their availability for World Cup matches will be subject to fitness while mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana who got injured during the Asia Cup also subjected to fitness and these three names already in the 15 member squad.One stand bye player bowling all rounder Chamika Karunaratne also named for this tour as back up player while last moment Dushan Hemantha is included for the squad for Wanindu Hasaranga.
Lahiru Kumara, who was withdrawn from Asia Cup squad due to a side strain he picked up during Lanka Premier League 2023, has also returned to the side after recovering from injury.
However, Sri Lanka will miss the services of their pace spearhead Dushmantha Chameera as he was unable to recover from the shoulder injury he picked up during LPL.
Spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who injured his right hamstring during Sri Lanka’s Super Four clash against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023, has been named in the squad but his availability is also subject to fitness. According to the SLC medical committee chairmen Professor Arjuna de Silva both Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka the paceman have good chance to play this world cup but key leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is doubhtful but most probably he will be okay during this world cup matches .
Wanindu still in recovery period but even the foreign doctors also said he has to undergo surgery to focusd more on his future said Prof Arjuna de Silva.We know Wanindu is acommitted player with determination and always plays for the team and the country.At the moment he is keen to play world cup and then go for the surgery and selectors also have an idea to get his service as required at this world cup but always back up player Dushan Hemantha is with the team.
Meanwhile last moment on yesterday evening Wanindu Hasaranga has not been included in the 15-member squad as the player is still in the process of recovering from an injury. His recovery will be monitored, and if he is declared fit to play, he will be considered as a replacement in the event of an injury to a squad member during the tournament
Sri Lankan approved team batting department will remain as the same as during the Asia Cup squad, with Sri Lanka’s most experienced current batter Angelo Mathews, who had an impressive outing with both bat and ball during the recently concluded Lanka Premier League, has failed to ensure his place .
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will kick off with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Sri Lanka will play their first game of the tournament against South Africa on October 7 at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. Sri Lanka will also play two warm-up games prior to the tournament against Bangladesh and Afghanistan on September 29 and October 3 respectively.
