The Police have identified a person who is said to have spied for the gunmen who targeted a man who was travelling in a three-wheeler with his wife, daughter and another woman in Maligakanda on Sunday.
The man’s six-year-old daughter who was injured in the shooting succumbed to her injuries at the national hospital. The man who is also a suspect in a murder case was returning after visiting the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court to fulfil bail conditions in a case related to the possession of the drug ‘ice’.
The person whom the Police have identified is said to have spied for the gunmen and is said to be in hiding. Yesterday, the Police had questioned his wife regarding the incident.
Police said that the suspect is a resident of Kotahena.
Police said that the deceased girl and her parents and another woman who came to help with bail conditions were travelling towards Maradana in a three-wheeler when two people on a motorcycle intercepted the three-wheeler and opened fire.
The shooting took place about 200 metres from the Court premises towards Maradana, and four shots were fired at the three-wheeler.
The girl’s father was hit by two bullets in his leg and shoulder and with the injuries he got down from the trishaw and ran towards the Kuppiyawatta Temple.
When the gunmen chased after him, the motorcycle overturned while taking a turn.
Even after that the two persons on the motorcycle had given chase to their target who managed to escape.
The Police said that it is not yet clear who the gunmen were and their motive.
The Police intelligence agencies have also received information that some people had roamed around his residence two days back with the intention of killing him.
The injured man is a suspect in the hacking to death of a 38-year-old man on November 28, 2022. He was later released on bail in that case.
It is said that the person who was killed by him was involved in money laundering for drug dealers.
The man who was hacked to death had earlier been arrested by the Police, along with his brother, for money laundering through the undiyal method.
Therefore, the senior police officer further stated that the Police are still investigating whether there is any connection between the shooting that took place in Maligakanda and the killing of the person involved in the alleged money laundering last year.
