CMC yet to collect Rs.6,280 Mn in rent, other taxes

COPA sets July 6 deadline to prepare recovery plan:

It has been revealed in the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) that the income deficit of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) in 2022 is Rs.6,280.50 million. It was revealed that the total income deficit of the Colombo Municipal Council in 2021 is Rs.5,835.6 million and Rs.5,386.4 million

in 2020. It has also been revealed that the income arrears for 2019 is Rs.4,481.5 million and it has been identified that these arrears are in the form of assessment tax, rent and other taxes.

It was also revealed that the private entities contracted to collect the parking fees have continued to default on the monthly rental payments to the Municipal Council and that the arrears to be collected from 38 entities by December 31, 2021, is Rs.265 million.

Thus, the Committee recommended a programme should be prepared with dates to recover this money by July 6, 2023, and a full report should be submitted to the COPA committee.

These facts were revealed when the Committee on Public Accounts met in Parliament on June 6 under the Chairmanship of State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna to examine the Auditor General’s reports and the current performance of the Colombo Municipal Council for the years 2020/2021.
