Ehelepola Walauwa to be handed over to the Maligawa

The Cabinet Paper regarding the handing over of the historical Ehelepola Walauwa to Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy has been presented to the Cabinet of Ministers.

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga had presented the related Cabinet Paper. The Ehelepola Walauwa located at Rajaveediya in Kandy is the residence of the Ehelepola Maha Adhikaram and his family members during the reign of King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe.

During the British colonial period (1844 AD) it was used as a military barracks and later it was maintained as a prison cell affiliated Bogambara Prison.

The Walauwa is located in the sacred area of Kandy Sri Dalada Maligawa and has been declared as a building with archaeological value in 2005. Under the Kandy City Development Plan, the Ehelepola Walauwa was handed over to the Urban Development Authority.

Under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology, on the instructions and guidance of the Urban Development Authority, the renovation of the Ehelepola Walauwa has been carried out by spending Rs.154.8 million from Urban Development Authority funds.

This Cabinet paper was submitted to hand it over to Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy after the renovation work.
