Two suspects arrested for gem robberies in Kandy and Colombo

Two suspects were arrested last Monday (22) by Kandy police for stealing three blue sapphires worth Rs. 8.1 million from three gems and jewellery shops in Kandy and Colombo. They have replaced fake glass replicas with the original ones after entering the shops as buyers.

Showing their interest in buying gems, the two suspects had obtained pictures of the stones from the shop owners before their entry to the shops.

Police had identified the rented vehicle that suspects came by with CCTV footage. After questioning the driver of the vehicle, the suspects have been arrested.

They are drug addicts and residents of Colombo and Matara.

Police said that the suspects have sold two gems to two businessmen in Eheliyagoda and Rathnapura for Rs. 500,000 and Rs. 250,000. Investigations are continuing.
