Extremist political parties taking advantage of youth discomfort - Minister

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said extremist political parties are trying to fulfill their narrow political needs by taking undue advantage of the youth discomfort due to the delay in the evaluation of Advanced Level Examination answer scripts.

He said that last week, it was revealed by intelligence reports that due to the delay in the evaluation of Advanced Level Examination answer scripts, young people in the age group of 18-20 years are getting very uncomfortable and anxious.

Further commenting on the matter, the minister said that the teachers have agreed to evaluate the AL examination papers and they are currently working to prevent possible delays by conducting practical tests early.

The minister requested university lecturers who are still engaged in protests to consider the fact that the children of some university lecturers have also appeared for this examination and further refusing to evaluate examination papers may delay their educational activities in addition to other children and participate in the evaluation of examination papers.

“Also, the evaluation of the answer scripts should be done with utmost confidentiality and responsibility and is a heavy responsibility and the entire society  expects the university lecturers will engage in this task regardless of personal advantages,” he added. The minister also said that the Education Ministry was prepared to provide whatever support needed. The Minister was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Education’s Vocational Training Authority and Foreign Employment Bureau to train Sri Lankan workers going abroad as skilled workers.
