Kandy HA and Wennapuwa HA men’s joint champions

The women’s champion Sri Lanka Schools ‘A’ team. The team comprised players from Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo, Ladies College Colombo, Bishops College, Seethadevi Balika Kandy, Swarnamali Balika Kandy, Mahamaya Balika Kandy, President’s College Rajagiriya, Sri Sangamitta Balika Matale.

The junior under 21 Hockey National Championship organized by the Kandy District Hockey Association and conducted by the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation which started on Thursday 23rd came to an end on Sunday at the Peradeniya University grounds. Kandy Hockey Association team and Wennapuwa Hockey Association teams ended as joint champions in the 43rd men’s event and in the 2nd women’s event Sri Lanka School “A” became champions with Wennapuwa Hockey Association taking the second place. The four day tournament presented some good hockey and only the men’s final ended on a sad note without play due to rain. A big hand should go to the Kandy District Hockey Association headed by R. Maheswaran for doing a good job in the organizing part. Himesh Tenakoon was the chief guest and Murad Amirdeen was the guest of honour.

The Men’s 13 teams which took part were Group “A” Mercantile HA, Sri Lanka Schools HA (B), Kandy HA, (Group “B”) Wennappuwa HA, Gampaha HA, Combined University HA, (Group “C”) Matale HA, UVA HA, (Group “D”) Kalutara HA, Galle HA, Matara HA, Colombo HA and Sri Lanka Schools HA (A), all-in all thirteen teams. Then in the women’s event eight teams (Group “A”) Wennappuwa HA, Combined University HA, Matale HA, Sri Lanka Schools HA (A), (Group “B”) Kandy HA, Sri Lanka HA (B), Defence Service HA and Colombo HA .

In the men’s quarter finals Kandy HA beat Combined University HA by 2 goals to nil, Wennapuwa HA beat Mercantile HA 2-0. Colombo HA beat Kalutara HA 1-0, and Matale HA beat Sri Lanka Schools “A” 1-0. Then in the first semifinal Kandy HA beat Colombo HA in a close game by 2 goals to 1. In the second semifinal Wennapuwa HA beat Matale HA 4-2. In the third place game Colombo HA were able to beat Matale HA by 2 goals to nil. In the final, the match was not played and the Kandy HA and Wennapuwa HA were declared joint champions. The 3rd place went to Colombo HA and the 4th place to Matale HA.

The women’s event was well contested and in the semifinals Sri Lanka Schools “A” side beat Defence Services HA by 1 goal to nil and in the second semifinal Wennapuwa HA beat Colombo HA by 5 goals to nil. Then in the final Sri Lanka Schools “A” beat Wennapuwa HA 2-1. The third place went on to Defence Services HA and the 4th place was won by Colombo HA.
