Navod and Janith steer Jaffna to easy win

Opener Navod Paranavithana (82) and Janith Liyanage (53) hit half centuries as Jaffna recorded an easy seven-wicket win over Kandy in their National Super league one day cricket fixture played at SSC grounds yesterday.

Navod Paranavithana hit 68 balls knock of 82 with 13 fours while Nishan Madushka who came from New Zealand after the test series scored 52 in 46 balls with six fours and a six also added valuable 126-run stand while former St Peter’s skipper Janith Liyanage hit a run a ball 53 with a four and three sixes paved the way to reach their target in 39.2 overs. Earlier Kandy scored 249 all out in 49.4 overs while Sadun Weerakkody (62 in 72 balls with six fours and two sixes) and Asel Sigera (50 min 61 balls with three fours and a six) hit half centuries.

The paceman Shiran Fernando was the chief wrecker for Jaffna having four for 62 while leg spinners Dilum Sudeera and Jeffrey Vandersay took two wickets apiece.

Meanwhile the promising paceman Milan Ratnayake had fine figures of four for 41 in 8.5 overs spell as Galle recorded five wickets win over Dambulla in their match played at R. Premadasa International cricket stadium yesterday. Milan Ratnayake who was at the bench during last two New Zealand matches made a good come back with this spell.

In fact this was the first defeat of Dambulla team led by Minod Baanuka as they were bundled out for 200 in 49.5 overs and Galle reached their winning target in just 33.5 overs. Galle opener Sohan de Livera hit a match winning knock of 76.
