The Kekulu Thuru Udana programme sponsored by the Agriculture Ministry under which fruits plants were grown in 506 schools in the Anuradhapura District, with the participation of 18,534 students has been a tremendous success.
The tree planting campaign inaugurated at Anuradhapura Mahinda Primary School in January 2021, expanded to other schools. The Agriculture Ministry distributed one fruit plant per student for planting and nurturing under the supervision of teachers, parents and agricultural officials.
Anuradhapura District Agriculture Director Lalitha Thenuwara recently visited the schools to collect firsthand information about the programme.
“The Agriculture Ministry has allocated Rs. 3 million initially for the programme. Students have grown orange, jak, beli, rose apple, etc. These students have been afforded a golden opportunity to engage in environment protection activities and contribute towards the national food security drive, under this project. I’m happy to observe that almost all fruit plants are thriving,” Thenuwara said.
