Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) as the ruling party in the future would initiate massive development projects in Thirukkovil in Ampara.
Addressing a large gathering in Thirukkovil last Thursday, the Opposition Leader said statistics have revealed that over 10,000 acres of cultivable lands in the Thirukkovil area have been neglected by authorities due to various reasons and he assured that the whole area will once again be economically developed under an SJB Government in the future.
He said he has noted that large acres of cultivable lands in Thirukkovil are still idling and nobody has so far taken any step to develop them.
“As an initial step, we wish to launch a drinking water project and an irrigation system in the area since water resource is important to commence all development projects,” he said.
He said steps will also be taken to develop the inland fishing industry and thereafter attention will be focused towards developing the agricultural sector including paddy cultivation.
“In addition, special attention will be focused on developing the English language skills of schoolchildren in Thirukkovil and thereafter we wish to introduce Information Technology as a subject under the existing ‘Sakwala’ educational programme,” he said.
Opposition Leader Premadasa also focused attention on the closure of several small-scale industries that were established by his late father Ranasinghe Premadasa and said these industries will be revived as it will immensely benefit unemployed youth in the area.
He also highlighted the importance of developing the hospitality industry in Thirukkovil as currently the tourist arrivals are also high in the Ampara district.
He said in addition, steps will also been taken to develop the livestock industry and set up a milk manufacturing factory for the benefit of milk farmers in Thirukkovil.
