EC Member Charles resigns

Divisions in the Commission confirmed

Election Commission Member P. S. M. Charles has tendered her resignation to President Ranil Wickremesinghe citing that she will resign as a member of the Commission with effect from yesterday (25).

It has been revealed that there was deep division within the Election Commission over several issues including the holding of the Local Government Election. However Election Commission  Chairman Nimal Punchihewa had repeatedly said that no divisions among the Commission members existed.

The resignation of commission member and a senior public servant who was responsible in providing foods and other essential items to the thousands of people held hostage by the LTTE during the height of terrorism as former Vavuniya Government Agent, shows that there is deep divisions within the Commission.

Charles as a Special Grade Officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service steered many public institutions effectively during her career spanning over many decades.

She was also appointed as Northern Province Governor.

Prior to this appointment, Charles has served as the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine and Sri Lanka Customs Director General.

The Constitutional Council which met for the first time yesterday decided to publish a newspaper advertisement calling for applications for the appointment as Members for number of commissions including the Election Commission.

A period of two weeks from the date of advertisement will be given to submit such applications.
