Two deaths including of a four-months-old infant were reported when a mini van collided head on with a passenger bus at Ridithenna, Valachchenai along the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa highway last evening. The 80-year-old driver of the van died on the spot and four women have been admitted to the Batticaloa hospital in critical condition, police said. One of them has been identified as a doctor.
According to the police, the deceased are residents of Puttalam and the van had met with this accident while they were travelling to Akkaraipattu.
Police have arrested the driver of the private bus, which was plying to Kaduruwela from Kalmunai.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accident had taken place when the driver of the van fell asleep while driving.Valachchenai police are investigating.
