EEA, CEB trade charges over inability to provide continuous power supply

The Electrical Engineers’ Association (EEA) alleges that arbitrary actions taken by the authorities in the recent past have resulted in the inability to provide continuous electricity supply during the Advanced Level Examinations period.

The EEA alleged that it may not be possible to provide electricity continuously during the A/Level Examinations period due to the arbitrary actions taken by the authorities in the past.

Representatives of the EEA made these remarks at a press conference held yesterday. EEA President Nihal Weeraratne said that this problem would not have arisen if the fuel and coal required for electricity generation were provided in due time. “We were ready to generate electricity. But we are not a profit-making institution. It is true that the financial situation has deteriorated,” he said. He added that only money cannot run turbines, but there should be a fuel supply process.

“If we had bought coal, we could have generated electricity. Because there was no coal in those days, we generated electricity from water,” he said. Coal, naphtha, water and diesel are all needed, he said. When contacted, a Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) spokesman said that the EEA is also greatly responsible for this power crisis since it put a stop to fruitful power generation plans. They were reluctant to approve hundreds of renewable energy projects, the spokesman said.
