Railway authorities to set up special unit to manage its assets, property and land

Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardena has instructed the railway authorities to set up a special unit to manage the assets, property and land owned by the railways.

The Minister gave these instructions at a meeting held at the Ministry auditorium.

The Minister has explained that the Sri Lanka Railway Department currently has more than 14,000 acres of land across the country, of which more than 8,000 acres of land has been used for railway stations and other administrative needs, and under asset management, there are about five thousand acres of land that can be provided on a lease basis. But it was revealed that only 1,500 acres has been given for external parties on lease agreements.

Accordingly, the discussion focused on identifying the people who are illegally enjoying the land owned by the Railway Department without any legal right or lease agreement, and the possible methods of speedily acquiring the lease money due to the Railway Department from them.

Accordingly, regarding the management of the assets owned by the railways, Minister Dr. Gunawardena had advised that a separate unit be set up for the management of the property and land owned by the railways as soon as possible in line with Cabinet approval obtained in the latter half of last year.
