ICs undergoing interim period with new appointments pending - Dr. Mahanamahewa

The Independent Commissions (ICs) are undergoing interim periods with new appointments pending to it since the passage of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, Former Dean and Professor, University of Technology Jamaica, Attorney-at-Law, Prathiba Mahanamahewa said.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, he said the Constitutional Council (CC) chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena would call for applications for new members of the Commissions such as Bribery, Police, Election Commissions, etc soon after its first sitting.

“The appointment of the CC dragged on for some time, but now its three civil society members have been appointed.

The rest of the Council comprises Members of Parliament. The CC will recommend names of new members of commissions to the President and the President will make the appointments. It will take some time. Till then, the existing commissions can continue their duties. However, the commissions are having an interim period at the moment,” he commented.
