Boyfriend arrested over Race Course murder

Science Faculty undergrad hacked to death

The Cinnamon Gardens Police arrested an undergrad of the Science Faculty of the University of Colombo in connection with the murder of a female student of the same faculty, who was found killed at the Colombo Race Course premises yesterday. Police Media Spokesman, SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the murder had taken place between 12 noon and 1 p.m. yesterday. 

The victim had succumbed to the heavy bleeding caused by the cut injuries to her neck, the spokesman said.

Police had arrested the suspect after about three hours from the incident along with a knife which is said to have been used to kill the fellow student. The victim, 24-year-old Chathuri Hansika Mallikaarachchi is a resident of Kiriwaththuduwa, Homagama. The suspect is a 24-year-old resident of Kittampahuwa, Wellampitiya.

It was reported that the suspect had attempted to commit suicide after killing the girl, but this is yet to be confirmed by the police.

The parents of the murder victim are retired military persons, who are running a pharmacy in the Kiriwaththuduwa area. She is the eldest child of the family and has a sister.

She had entered the university after passing the G.C.E. (A/L) with flying colours from a reputed girls’ college in Nugegoda.

It has not been revealed to the police yet whether the duo had a love affair or the reason behind the murder. The suspect was to be produced before the court after the interrogation by the police.

Cinnamon Garden Police are conducting investigations into the incident.
