Vishmi and Dewmi’s half tons in vain as Bangladesh win

Skipper Vishmi Gunaratne (60) and Dewmi Vihanga (55) hit half centuries but it was in vain as Bangladesh recorded a thrilling 9 runs win over Sri Lanka in their ICC women’s under 19 World Cup cricket fixture played at Binoni, South Africa yesterday.

Bangladesh put into bat first scored a challenging total of 165 for 2 wickets in 20 overs while Sri Lankan lasses were close but just nine runs short to win this game. The opener Afia Prottasha 53 in 43 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes and Shorna Akter hit an unbeaten 50 in 28 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes helped build up their total while Sri Lankan fast bowler Rashmi Nethranjali took a solitary wicket given away 30 runs in her four over spell.

Sri Lanka lasses with a poor start lost their openers Nethmi Senaratne (0) and Sumudu Nisansala (3) with in first four overs but Skipper Vishmi Gunaratne played a remarkable innings throughout the innings while Dewmi Vihanga made a good supporting role to add superb 94 runs third wicket stand. Vishmi was unbeaten 60 in 54 balls with eight fours and a six while Dewmi scored 55 in 44 balls hit seven fours and two sixes. Bangladesh opener Afia Prottasha was named Player of the Match.

Sri Lanka will meet Australia in their third league round game which is scheduled to be played tomorrow (18) in Binoni from 1.30pm (Sri Lanka time). Bangladesh already having back to back wins on top of the points table (4 points) while Sri Lanka having a win (2 points) over USA in second place in their group.
