Airline passenger arrested with T-56 type live bullet

Airport security officers found a T-56 type of live bullet in the luggage of an airline passenger who arrived at the BIA to depart for India on a pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple on Sunday.

Accordingly, the Airport Security Division officers arrested the 47-year-old passenger, a resident of Hatton and handed him over to the Katunayake Airport Police Station.

Investigations have revealed that a group of 30 people, including the suspect, had arrived at the airport as a group to go on this pilgrimage. It has also been revealed that 20 persons including the suspect have bought 15 parcels of scrap iron weighing 30 kg each from a warehouse in Wattala to be taken to India with the intention of selling it. A T-56 live ammunition was found in one of the parcels. A senior Police officer stated that this bullet was detected during the scan at the airport. Police are investigating.
