Woman who threw new born under probe

Theripehe Police have launched an investigation into an incident of throwing a new born baby to a toilet pit by the mother.

She had given birth to the infant in a toilet of the Theripehe Hospital. She had wrapped the baby in a piece of cloth,

and carried it to her sister’s house, where she threw it to the toilet pit. The woman (26) is unmarried, and is a resident of Wekumbura, Theripehe. She had gone to the Theripehe hospital, complaining of a stomachache, but had left the premises after using the toilet, without meeting the doctor. The hospital sent a midwife to her address to check on her as there was blood in the hospital toilet that she used. The midwife, after examining the woman, had sent her to the Nuwara-Eliya Hospital for treatment. Police said no immediate action was taken against the woman, as she was ill, and action would be proceeded after her treatment was over. The woman had given birth to the infant on Wednesday, and she had told the Police that it was a stillbirth. The Police, which recovered the baby’s body from the toilet pit, had handed it over to the Nuwara-Eliya Hospital to determine whether it was a stillbirth.
