Attack on former Pera VC: Students further remanded

Kandy Chief Magistrate Srinith Wijesekara yesterday ordered to further remand the 13 students from the Peradeniya University who have been arrested in connection with the attack on the former Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Athula Senaratne and his family, until January 18.

The ex-President of the university’s students’ union Anuradha Vidanage is also among the arrested and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed court that the present President of the union Chamod Sathsara is also due to be arrested in connection with the incident.

The university has suspended the studentship of 14 students following this brutal attack.

When the arrested students, who were in the remand custody were presented for an identification parade on December 22, Prof. Senaratne had identified six students.

The lawyers who appeared for the suspects requested the court to release the other students who were not identified by the victim at the parade, on bail yesterday.

However, the request was rejected by the Magistrate considering the facts that the police have reported facts to the court under the Public Property Act and the investigations into the incident conducted by the CID are still going on.
