Junior Open Golf from December 20 at RCGC

The Prima Sunrise Bread Sponsors 14th Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf 2022 and the Regional Junior Opens 2023 the prestigious event in the Junior Golf Calendar will be worked off from December 20 to 22 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club. Prima Group Sri Lanka, has continued its commitment to promote junior golf in partnership with the national body for golf in the country the Sri Lanka Golf. The Sri Lanka Junior Opens is thus the established benchmark for the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) for junior golfers. The winner of the Sri Lanka Junior Open will be crowned the National Junior Champion in both boy’s and girl’s categories.

Speaking at the media conference, Michael Perera Magala, President Sri Lanka Golf, thanked Prima Sunrise Bread the Prima Group for sponsoring the event.

The Group General Manager of Prima Group Sri Lanka stressed as the long-standing partner in supporting junior golf in Sri Lanka, we are pleased to sponsor the Junior Open Golf once again this year. We are grateful to the Sri Lanka Golf for hosting the tournament once again".

The Chairperson of Junior Sub Committee of Sri Lanka Golf Niloo Jayatilake said the committed and continuous sponsorship of junior golf by Prima Sunrise Bread has been invaluable support to Sri Lanka Golf in promoting the sport island wide. The popularity of the sport is growing rapidly in the country due to the development programs being carried out by Sri Lanka Golf. This year we witnesses increased participation of youngsters from Kandy, Anuradhapura and Nuwara-Eliya.

One of these juniors Niresh Tejwani later going on to win the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship becoming the youngest Sri Lankan to do so.

Prima Sunrise Bread and Deputy General Manager, Ceylon Agro industries of Prima Group Sajith Guneratne said his company always willing to help sports in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Junior Open has been a traditional event held in December and held at RCGC since 1980’s run by Sri Lanka Golf. The tournament cover the age group categories from 9 years to 18 years.

The tournament has grown over the years and approximately 80 to 100 children compete for these junior awards. To foster talent from outstation, Regional Junior Opens will be conducted in different parts of the country, namely hambantota, Kandy, Nuwara Eliyas and Trincomalee.

This year's tournament will see defending Champion Yannik Kumara and Kaya Daluwatte compete in the boys and girls categories respectively.

However, a stiff competition is expected from Niresh Tejwani, Vinuda Weerasinghe, K. Danushan, Sankanath Hesara and Sherin Balasuriya who is playing competitive golf currently. The Prize giving will be held on 22, 3 p.m. at RCGC.
