No egg shortage in the country - ACEPA

The All Ceylon Egg Producers Association (ACEPA) expressed concern over the artificial egg shortage created by retail shops and supermarkets countrywide, especially in the Western Province  and said certain traders are now purposely refraining from selling eggs expecting the Government to reconsider the price increase of both white and brown varieties again.

Speaking to Daily News ACEPA Chairman R.M. Sarath Attanayake said there is no shortage of eggs in the country at present and assured that even there will be no shortage of eggs during the forthcoming X’Mas and New Year seasons.

Quoting reports, the ACEPA Chairman said adequate quantities of eggs are currently produced by poultry farmers and consumers should not have any doubts for any egg shortage as the prices of eggs will be further reduced during the coming months.

Attanayake said although the Government issued an Extraordinary Gazette Notification stating that eggs cannot be sold above Rs.50, during the forthcoming festive season, consumers will be able to buy eggs even lower than the controlled price.

“Even now consumers should not buy eggs for more than Rs. 50,” he said. Meanwhile, a poultry seller Kamal Senanayaka said some super markets sell eggs at Rs. 65.00 each saying that the additional Rs. 15 is charged for packing purposes.

A poultry farm owner from Chilaw, John Fernando said most poultry farmers have started to produce only high quality eggs with the thick yellow coloured yolk as there is a great demand for such eggs which are highly nutritious.

He also requested the Agriculture Minister to recognize the problems faced by poultry farmers due to the massive shortage of poultry feed such as maize and soya as well as vitamins.
