CEB requires USD 1,079 Mn to provide uninterrupted power supply for 2023

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) requires foreign currencies worth USD 1,079 million to provide an uninterrupted power supply for 2023,

according to a chart shared by Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara. The chart was compiled by the CEB system control unit, assuming that the next year will be a dry year.

The Minister shared the chart in his Twitter account yesterday. As per the estimates, the highest amount of foreign currency (USD 541million) is required to pay for the fuel, imported by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, for thermal power generation. USD 448 million is required to pay for coal imports.

Another USD 62 million is required for material purchases and another USD 28 million is required for project loan repayments.

The CEB system control has come up with budget calculations for 12 scenarios for the next year, six without any power cuts and six with three-hour daily power cuts.

The cost varies depending whether it is a dry or wet year, due to variations of hydro power generation capacity. In all scenarios, it is a loss for the CEB, under the current rates of electricity tariff.

The average cost per unit is between Rs 45.61 and Rs 58.53 in each scenario, while the average tariff, as of now, is Rs 29.14.
