New schemes for fishermen to mark World Fisheries Day today

Today is World Fisheries Day. The national celebration ceremony to mark the occasion jointly organized by the Fisheries Ministry and the State Ministry will be held today (21)  at 10 am at the Provincial Secretariat premises in Beruwala under the patronage of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunewardene and Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda and State Minister Piyal Nishantha de Silva at 10.00 am.

In conjunction with the World Fisheries Day, the ‘Dala Rala Saviya’ programme implemented under the guidance of the Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda based on a concept of the Fisheries State Minister, Piyal Nishantha de Silva will be launched.

It includes introducing a new insurance system, introducing a new retirement scheme, introducing the ‘Diyawara Kekulu’ children’s savings account, issuing a commemorative stamp, giving scholarships to the children who have obtained excellent results among the children who are educated in fishery families, financial assistance to entrepreneurs involved in the ornamental fish industry.

A new insurance will be introduced to fishermen in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation called “Deewara Rekuma” under which, in case of death or injury while engaged in fishing due to an accident, a personal accident insurance cover of 1.2 million upto 2 million rupees will be given.

A new pension will be started in collaboration with the Agricultural Industrial and Agricultural Insurance Board and fishermen aged 18 to 59 years can contribute to that pension. This pension can be availed after 60 years.

After the person’s death, their children will be entitled to this pension until they reach the age of 18 and if they have disabled children, they will entitled for benefits until they get married.

The Ministry of Fisheries will also introduce the ‘Diyavara Kekulu’ children’s savings account, which will be started in collaboration with the Bank of Ceylon. Under this, every month money is given to the fishermen’s children for their educational activities. Fishermen’s children have many benefits such as gifts.
