Dr. W. A. Abeysinghe felicitated

Dr. W A. Abeysinghe the bilingual veteran writer who has authored over 400 books as of today was felicitated on November 16 at a ceremony graced by Ven. Rambukana Siddhartha Thera with scholars and writers at the National Library and Documentation Services Board. Prof. Sandagomi Coperahewa delivered the keynote speech.

Dr. Abeysinghe who is still very much active in literary work has won many accolades. He was conferred with the prestigious ‘Sahithya Rathna Sammana’ at the 2020/2021 State Literary Award Ceremony. He has represented Sri Lanka at many international forums to bring glory to the nation.

Dr. Abeysinghe commenced his career as an English trained teacher at Central College, Kuliyapitiya in 1960. He eventually contributed as a university lecturer, professional and free-lance journalist, Features Editor (Sirilaka), Editorial Director and Consultant (Lake House) and as a television and radio personality. As a lyricist he has penned gems of lyrics sung by veteran artistes in the country.

‘Adawanwu Denethin Galana’ the evergreen song of Maestro Amaradewa was penned by him. In his speech Dr. Abeysinghe stressed the dire need to revive the ‘Resourceful teacher’ who was active in the 1960s to early 1980s in our schools.

Mentioning his guru, the legendary Lionel Lokuliyana he said the former has inculcated the seeds to nurture creativity within his mind during his schooling days.
