 Sixteen teams vie for honours in C Tag Rugby Tourney

Sixteen teams will lock horns for supremacy at the seventh sedition of the C Tag Rugby Tournament which is scheduled to kick-off at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place on November 12 from 2.30 p.m. onwards.

Some of the prominent selected school teams in the country, are slated in four groups will be in fray at this iconic tag rugby tournament which is to resume after a few years of break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament organizers AGOAL International Private Limited opted to host this year’s tournament with mixed gender where two lasses are mandatory along with two male players over 25 and three players over 35 years of age in a team handling the oval shaped ball. The inclusion of the women segment is purely done to add more glamour to the tournament which is to be conducted under a carnival atmosphere where families with children will have unlimited entertainment while witnessing the games. The sister schools of each participating team will field two ladies players.

All matches will be competed on a round robin basis before they embark to the Bowl, Plate and Cup competition. All matches will be staged in two pitches where there wont be any conversion after scoring. The Plate, Bowl and the Cup finals are scheduled to be played at 8.30, 8.45 and 9 p.m. under lights respectively.

This tournament which is co-sponsored by eight sponsors will have some attractive prizes on offer with the winner of the Cup Championship will carry away Rs.350,000 in cash and replicas while the winners of the other segments too will receive awards. Meanwhile, the CR and FC Centenary committee has come forward to donate cash contribution to be offered to the individual players performances.

Referees affiliated to the governing body will officiate in this tournament which will be conducted on par with the international standards of the game.

Dilroy Fernando the Tournament Director speaking to media said that We are glad to resume this tournament after a break. We are thankful to our esteemed sponsors who have shown their willingness and got on board to sponsor this years event. We had more school requesting to take part in this event but had to restrict to 16 teams. Subsequently, to add more glamour to this event, we opted to include two ladies per team.

This year’s tournament will be hosted in a carnival atmosphere where families with their loved ones can witness the matches while enjoying various other entertainment in the vicinity of CR. Our aim is to attract more crowds to witness rugby.

Group A- Royal Blue, Ananda, D. S.Senanayake and St. Anthonys, Kandy
Group B- Isipathana White, Wesley, Vidyartha and Trinity

Group C- St. Benedicts, Dharmaraja, Royal Gold and Kingswood
Group D- St. Sylvesters, Isipathana Green, St. Josephs, Colombo and S.Thomas,Mount Lavinia
