Journalists should make aware people of disaster risks

Ampara District Secretary J.M.A. Douglas said that they should play a pivotal role in educating the masses of disaster risks and hazards and see that they are fully aware of taking all precautionary measures in combating the situation. He was addressing a media briefing in Ampara recently.

“They also should be in constant touch with officials of the Disaster Management. Only by then they could advise the people in disaster situation,” he said.

A workshop on Disaster Risk Management for Media Personnel in the Ampara District organised by the Ampara District Disaster Management Centre with the assistance of the World Vision was held at Lake Jay Hotel in Ampara on Thursday.

The programme began with a welcome address by District Disaster Management Centre Asst. Director M.A.C. Mohamed Riyas was attended by Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil journalists from the District.

District Secretary outlined the duties of the journalists and appealed them to work for the betterment of society. “They also should be impartial and trustworthy at all times,” he said.

DMC Director of Training and Awareness Sugath Dissanayake detailed the Disaster Risk Management Mechanism in Sri Lanka and Department of Metrology Ass. Director Dulari Fernando spoke on global hazards and climate change. District NDRSC Officer A.M.Fairose lectured on Disaster relief activities and circulars and Janaka Hathun Pathiraja briefed on Media duties and responsibilities on Disaster Management sector.
