Students arrested for setting fire at Ella reserve

Released on personal bail of Rs.100,000
Told to plant ten saplings each

Sixteen students who were arrested for allegedly setting fire on the Ravana Ella Forest reserve were released on personal bail of Rs.100,000 each when they were produced before Bandarawela Magistrate Amila Ranatunga yesterday.

These students who went to the Ravana Ella Forest Reserve in Ella to celebrate a birthday had set fire to the reserve.They were arrested by the Ella police on Saturday evening.

These students studying in Grade 10 at Saraswathie Central College in Badulla were residents of Glenpinwatte, Bogahamadiththa, Eladaluwa road, Badulusirigama, Aselapura, Hali Ela and Unagollawatte.

They had left their homes informing their parents that they were attending tuition classes in Bandarawela town.They had arrived in Ella by train and climbed the Ella mountain to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It has been reported that these students have set on fire the shrubs following the party.

As the fire raged in the mountain reserve, these students had attempted to flee the area. However the people living in the villages adjacent to the reserve have caught them and handed over to the Ella police. Disaster Management Unit Additional Director E.M.L.Udayakumara said over 15 acres in the forest reserve has been destroyed following the fire.Police and army personnel attached to the Eladaluwa Army camp and villagers doused the fire.The Magistrate has also ordered every student to plant 10 saplings in the area affected by the fire under the close supervision of the police.
