Indian investors eye wind power in SL

Indian investors are keen on setting up wind power generation projects in Sri Lanka, said Vinod K Jacob, Deputy High Commissioner for India. This is in addition to its current investment projects in Sri Lanka.

“We would like to recall that India has extended unprecedented bilateral assistance amounting close to USD 4 billion this year for ameliorating the difficulties faced by the people of Sri Lanka. India has also advocated other bilateral and multilateral partners supporting Sri Lanka expeditiously in its current economic difficulties,” he said.

He was speaking at the PIMA forum on Sri Lanka’s turnaround strategies and the role of the international community held at Shangri La Hotel on Tuesday.Jacob also said that the Ambulance Service 1990 which was another donation from India along with the 40,000 housing projects all over Sri Lanka, over 700 scholarships each year and other assistance has proved that India is a good neighbour. India is also one of Sri Lanka’s highest tourism arrival markets. “We are keen to further assist Sri Lanka in numerous ways.”

Meanwhile Katsuki Kotaro- Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Japan said that they are looking at offering employment for Sri Lankan skilled workforce in Japan. “In addition we are also working closely with Sri Lanka to promote Japanese tourism to Sri Lanka.” One of the key priorities of Japan right now is trade and investment promotions to Sri Lanka. “Sri Lanka has a lot of rich minerals and we want to see Japanese investors to extract them and do value addition in Sri Lanka itself thereby giving the island nation more foreign exchange.”

“He also said that the Sri Lanka business climate for foreigners doing business in Sri Lanka too has to improve further. “We observe that the Sri Lanka government is drafting a new legislature towards curbing corruption and we see this as a step taken in the right direction.”
