Sri Lanka Netball team led by Gayanjali Amarawansa once again performed well to retain the Asian Netball crown when they defeated host Singapore 63-53 in their Asian Netball championship final played in Singapore yesterday.
It was a superb team effort by Sri Lankan lasses who fought back to win the final after close four quarters. In the first quarter Singapore won 19/13 with a six points difference. However Sri Lankan players made real come back to reduce the margin and Singapore led 30/27 after the second quarter.
Sri Lanka team changed their approach in the third quarter to get the lead winning by 46/38 and getting 8 points lead during the third quarter gave huge confidence to the Sri Lanka team.
The fourth and final quarter was dominated by Sri Lankan lasses winning 17/15 and Sri Lanka emerged champions to retain the title in great style by 63/53. Skipper Gayanjali Amarawansa did good leadership to the team while Goal Shooter Tharjani Shivalingam the 6’ 1” foot player dominated the game with her shooting skills. Dulangi Wannithilleka the deputy skipper and skipper Gayanjali Amarawansa controlled the center court with good passes while Gayani Dissanayake, Chaturangi Jayasuriya, the two former skippers and the newcomers to the team gave a good display to win the title.
The coach Hayasinth Wijesinghe, chairman of the selection committee Damayanthi Jayathileka and President of the Netball Federation Victoria Lakshmi and her team put in a lot of effort to get this success but last not least Sports Ministry gave good support.
