Royal-Trinity traditional hockey encounters on Friday

The annual Royal-Trinity hockey encounter, junior, senior and old boys games will be played on Friday at Asgiriya grounds.

These two school first met at hockey in the year 1955 which game ended in a draw and a trophy was introduced for the senior game in early 2000 and this year’s encounter for the trophy is 16th, that is known as the James Clifford Aelian “JCA” Corea Memorial Trophy for the senior game.

J.C.A. Corea is the first Sri Lankan principal of Royal College, succeeding E.L. Bradby in 1946. He was at the helm of Royal College until 1953. He was the first old Royalist to become a Principal of Royal College.

The under 16 game is played for Paul Jeyaraj trophy, he was a top hockey coach and vice principal of Trinity College , he coached the school for over 25 years.

He devoted his time in the evening at the grounds, and helped the school all three teams. In 1982 he produced an All Island winning team which side had top players like Roshan Rajadurai, Ghazali Wadood and Deve Ellepola the present President of the Trinity Hockey Foundation.

Old boy’s game is played for Col. Bertie Dias trophy; he is one of the finest sportsmen to come out of this school and won the Lion in hockey and rugby.

The junior game will played at 2 pm, the old boys at 3.30 and main senior game at 4.30. Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara the principal of Trinity College will grace the occasion as the chief guest and former player, captain and lion’s man of Trinity College Roshan Rajadura will be the guest of honor.
