Nakulugamuwa new railway station was handed over to the public yesterday (4).

Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa and a group of others participated in the opening with the patronage of the Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

When Minister Mahinda Amaraweera was the Transport Minister, the construction of the railway line from Galle to Kataragama was started and now it has been temporarily stopped near the Beliaatta station. The people of Nakulugamuwa, therefore, requested the Minister to build a railway station for them.

Accordingly, this railway station was built and the Transport Ministry inaugurated by Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the Transport Ministry for giving me the opportunity to hand over this railway station to the public today. The construction work started when I was the Transport Minister.

“The railway service is the most important part of our country’s transport system and I believe that if steps were taken to improve the railway service, many transport problems would be resolved.

“Even most of the developed countries have given priority to the railway service in their transport systems. But in our country, priority is given to private vehicles. That is why many problems have emerged today.

“It has been decided to build the railway line from Galle to Kataragama, but it is not possible to say whether the project will be implemented in the future. The reason for this is the lack of money due to the economic crisis. But if it was possible to build this railway line up to Kataragama, the agricultural products of Matara and Hambantota could be easily transported to the urban areas without any problem.

“Because of the new Nakulugamuwa Railway Station, all the people of this area will get a great facility. Therefore, despite the financial problems, I would like to express my thanks to all the officers of the Ceylon Railway Department for contributing to this cause,” the Minister said.
