Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa charged the Government for failing to provide adequate relief in several sectors to the people severely affected by the current economic crisis.
“By increasing the price of kerosene, the Government cannot continue to protect the fishery sector, industrialists and estate community. The urban people are destitute and there is no relief for them. There is no relief for small and medium scale industrialists, there is no relief for the three-wheeler owners for the settlement of their leasing instalments”, Premadasa said at the Samagi Jana Balawegaya meeting held in Akmeemana on Saturday. He also alleged that moves were afoot to remove the Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.
“The country’s 22 million people are distressed. Essential economic reforms needed to be implemented. Restructuring should take place,” he added.
The Opposition Leader also charged the Government that the Presidential Pardon granted to Ranjan Ramnayake was conditional and demanded an unconditional pardon for him.
“We did not asked for a limited or conditional pardon for him. We fought for a total President Pardon. The pardon granted to Ranjan is nominal. He is denied the right of speech and right to engage in politics and even to contest for an election. The cheap political dealers, who had sold their souls, executed a political deal using Ranjan.
We again and again demand for a complete pardon for Ranjan,” Premadasa appealed. “I invite all to rally round us to build a Peoples’ Government which perceives the masses’ grievances, sentiments and worries, he added. Former Galle District Parliamentarian Wjepala Hettiarachchi also spoke. Former MPs Bandulalal Bandarigoda, Piyasena Gamage and a large number of party men were present.
