Over 15,000 arrested in excise raids

The Excise Department has arrested 15,290 individuals through 18,164 countrywide raids carried out on tobacco, alcohol and dangerous drugs related offences from January 1 to July 31, 2022.

Among the arrested are 2,874 female suspects, the department said.

These raids have been carried out mainly under three categories namely the offences under the Excise Ordinance (14, 562 cases), offences under the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance (2,801 cases) and offences under the Tobacco Tax Act and National Authority of Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) Act (801 cases).

According to the Excise Department, the total value of the properties taken into the custody during these raids is over Rs.250 million.

In addition,Courts have imposed fines to the value of Rs.67 million on those arrested.

The department has conducted 2,143 raids in the licensed liquor shops within this year and the offenders have been fined Rs.70 million.
