Teachers upset over cancellation of ‘nearest school’ facility

The Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) says that the cancellation of the circular issued by the Education Ministry allowing teachers to serve in the nearest school due to transportation difficulties will create serious problems.

CTSU Central Provincial Secretary Gamagedara Dissanayake said that teachers who were serving in distant schools had been assigned by the Education Ministry to work in the nearest school until December 31. However the Ministry itself has cancelled the circular by issuing another circular.

He said this while speaking to the media in Naula yesterday.

Dissanayake said that teachers and schoolchildren have faced many difficulties due to unsolved transportation problems. In the face of such a situation, the Education Secretary has informed in a circular issued on August 30 that teachers are advised to report to the previous schools they served.

Dissanayake said that the teachers are facing severe difficulties in many parts of the island due to inadequate public transport services, fuel scarcity for private vehicles and the high cost to be borne for it.
