The government has requested to expedite the process of the Advisory Board appointed to study and make recommendations on releasing or granting bail to suspects incarcerated and detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Justice Minister Dr.Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe speaking to Daily News noted that he had met with the three committee members, Committee Chair former Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and members retired High Court Judge A.A.R. Heiyanthuduwa and former Solicitor General Suhada Gamlath.
Upon meeting, Minister Rajapakshe has requested the advisory board to complete its task as soon as possible. Minister Rajapakshe also said that he has commenced an extensive dialogue with the Tamil diaspora.
“One of the main issues in discussion with the diaspora is the matter regarding the detainees. The former president appointed this committee. I spoke with them and requested to expedite its process and complete its task as soon as possible,” Dr. Rajapakshe observed.
Minister Rajapakshe noted, “The dialogue with the diaspora is going on successfully. They are also quite satisfied with the discussions. I invited them to hold meetings to solve this issue in Jaffna itself without meeting on foreign lands. I believe we can solve our own problems. At the moment we are focused on building confidence and good relations between the parties.”
