Minister seeks Japanese support for fresh water fishing industry

Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda submitted a memorandum to Japan's Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mizukoshi Hideaki containing 29 requests asking for special financial and technological support to the NARA and NAQDA in its research programmes and Aqua Cultural development projects.

The Ambassador pledged to support projects to boost the fresh water fishing industry, ornamental fish breeding, prawn and sea cucumber cultivation etc.

Minister Devananda also sought the Japanese Government's assistance to introduce the latest fishing technology practiced in Japan.

During the bilateral discussions the Japanese ambassador informed the Fisheries Minister of providing a fleet of three-wheelers fitted with refrigerator and freezer facilities to transport fish.

Ministry Secretary Indu Ratnayake, Fisheries Ministry Director General Susantha Kahawattha, Advisors Dr. Nawarathneraja, Dr. Thawarasha and Ministry Director General (Technical) Dhammika Ranatunga were also present.
