Two held for smuggling gold biscuits worth Rs. 205 mn

An air passenger and a female employee of the Bandaranaike International Airport’s (BIA) duty-free mall, who tried to check out of the airport with a consignment of gold biscuits worth Rs.205 million rupees, have been taken into custody by Customs officials.

The consignment weighing nine kgs and 500 grams, was seized by Customs at the arrivals terminal by officials from the Narcotic Control Division last morning.

The suspect is a 39-year-old air passenger from Nittambuwa area. He arrived at the BIA by Emirates flight number EK-650 from Dubai at 8.35 in the morning. Also, the female suspect is a 38-year-old woman from Seeduwa, who was employed at the BIA duty-free shopping complex. The suspect was arrested while attempting to leave the BIA with 80 gold biscuits in his luggage and the airport attendant in her hand bag. The two are under the custody of the airport Customs officials and further investigations are being carried out on this.
